Cavan McGinsie’s 10 new Downtown Indianapolis places to try during Devour Indy

I travel. I eat. I drink. I meet. I record. I’m the Food & Drink Editor at NUVO and I’m always happy to chat with people about anything over a coffee, beer, or meal. Let me know your thoughts on Indianapolis.

Cannon Ball Brewing Co. (Downtown)
Cannon Ball recently opened in the up-and-coming Kennedy King neighborhood and has quickly become a popular neighborhood spot. Mark and Tania Swartz have worked on creating high-quality beer to go along with the menu Erin Kem (formerly of R Bistro) has crafted. During Devour Indy get a $30 three-course meal ($35 with beer flight) and get a taste of Kem’s lamb meatballs and veggie-lentil stew.
1702 Bellefontaine St., cannonballbrewingindy.com

CharBlue (Downtown)
When the team behind Georgia Reese said it was planning to open a steakhouse concept, no one knew what to expect. But with Ricky Hatfield running the kitchen they were able to create a menu that has your typical steakhouse fare, but there is no shortage of options for the foodie in all of us. For $35, during Devour Indy, you’ll get three courses with options including: braised alligator gumbo, veal osso bucco ravioli and caramel banana tart.
14 E. Washington St. , charblueindy.com

Hyde Park Prime Steakhouse (Downtown)
This is your standard steakhouse and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that; a great steak is a thing of beauty. It’s also one of the few places you’ll be able to get filet mignon during Devour. The place is high class, so it would make a perfect date night. During Devour, if you want the classic steakhouse experience, start off with a wedge salad, move onto that filet and end with some New York Style cheesecake, all for $35.
51 N. Illinois St., hydeparkrestaurants.com

Livery (Downtown)
Dishing out upscale Latin American dishes near Mass Ave, Livery joins the Cunningham Restaurant Group’s swath of restaurants around Indianapolis, which includes Mesh on Mass and Union 50. Their Devour menu is two for $40 and has appetizer options like fresh, tangy ceviche and entrees including octopus or pork pastor.
720 N. College Ave., livery-restaurant.com

LongBranch (Downtown)
From the people that brought us Shoefly comes this neighborhood bar and Asian street food concept. The food consists of twists on classics like General Tso’s and fried rice and the cocktail program is one of the best in the city. People taking advantage of the Devour option will get a two course meal featuring their most popular dish, the General Tso’s sweetbreads and ether glass of wine or sake for $30. They also have a vegan noodle entree for non-meat eaters.
2205 N. Delaware St., longbranchindy.com

MADD Greeks Mediterranean Grill (Downtown)
In an area lacking in the Mediterranean department, MADD Greeks came in to fill the void. They serve Greek street food, think gyros, shawarma, kabobs, falafel, etc. The Devour menu is one of the most wallet-friendly options at two for $30 for lunch or dinner. If you’re not lactose-intolerant, start out with the spicy feta, and if you want to stick with more cheese go for that tyropita, if not, the kotopoulo skaras or falafel are always solid options.
910 W. 10th St., maddgreeksgrille.com

Punch Bowl Social (Downtown)
This place has something for everyone, literally. But, during Devour, you’re here for the food, and featuring a menu by James Beard Award-winning chef and Top Chef judge, Hugh Acheson, you’re not going to be disappointed. The Devour menu  is $28 and consists of the addicting Hugh’s pimento cheese and fish and chips during lunch, or meatloaf at dinnertime. There is a gluten free dinner option for $23. Plus, Devour guests will get one free hour of free activities during a return visit.
120 S. Meridian St., punchbowlsocial.com

ReBar Indy (Downtown)
If tasting lots of different beers is up your alley, then ReBar is the place to go. They are known for their unique self-serving beer wall. But, that doesn’t mean that their food isn’t worthy of praise, all I can say is Wisconsin cheese curds and a signature burger (whipped chevre cheese, bacon jam, pickled yellow tomato & grilled red onion), holy mother of god. The Devour menu is two for $50, but keep in mind that includes two $15 beer wall cards, plus an appetizer, two entrees and six (count ’em), six chocolate chunk and toffee cookies.
20 N. Delaware St., rebarindy.com

Rooster’s Kitchen (Downtown)
It’s all about that build-yer-own mac and cheese. Owner Ross Katz has taken the dishes from his childhood and turned them into something spectacular for all of us around Indy to love. The fact that he knows craft beer and keeps a great selection on tap is just an added benefit. At two for $35 during Devour, you’ll be able to start off with the BBQ rub pork rinds, get two heaping bowls of that aforementioned mac and cheese and end with some white chocolate peppermint bread pudding; or at least that’s what I would do.
888 Massachusetts Ave., roostersindy.com

Salt on Mass (Downtown)
A high-end spot that serves up fresh, flown-in-daily seafood and featuring locally-sourced produce and meats, this is the perfect place to go for a nice date night dinner before heading across the street to a show at the Old National Centre. For Devourers, the price is  three courses for $40, and that will get you a salad, some perfectly prepared grouper, trout, filet or ravioli and a chocolate caramel brownie. If you want to treat yo’ self, add a lobster tail for $25.

Sean Copeland’s Top 5 New Places to Try for Devour Indy

Sean Copeland hosts a radio show weekdays 5-10A on B105.7 in Indianapolis.

Devour Indy, formerly known as Devour Downtown, Northside Night, etc is now our CITY WIDE restaurant week running now through February 5th. Since it’s city wide and since a ton of new restaurants have opened, here are my top 5 picks for new Devour places to try…

1) Longbranch (Downtown)– It’s described as a neighborhood bar featuring inauthentic Asian cuisine and adult libations. Inauthentic? Perhaps. But as good as it tastes, you won’t care.

2) Vida (Downtown)– I call this the best place to go when someone else is paying. It may be the most expensive restaurant in town, but it’s also one of the best and it’s appearing as a Devour option for the first time.  When I went, I was so focused on my food (and how amazing it was) that I neglected to snap a pic, so I borrowed one from someone else. If a professed foodie forgets to take a pic, it must be good.

3) The Legend (Eastside)– Shout out to my neighborhood, Irvington… part of Devour for the 1st time.  That’s where you’ll find The Legend.  While their Devour menu is just fine, the regular menu is affordable enough that you can get whatever sounds good.

4) Barbecue & Bourbon (Westside) — The name is two of my most loved food groups. Another new addition from Speedway! I used to live in KC (arguably the BBQ capital of the world) so I can be a bit of a BBQ snob, but theirs is some of the best I’ve had in town…and their menu is a great value!

5) Rock Cola Cafe (Eastside)– another Devour addition from the East side! This place IS nostalgia.  Choc-ola, one of the best club sandwiches I’ve ever had, and this dessert called Blueberry Thrill.

Rachel Russell’s Top 5 Favorite Devour Indy Dining Spots

Rachel Russell is the digital content manager and editor for Edible Indy, a local magazine connecting farmers, producers and food artisans in the community. When she’s not learning and writing about local food, she enjoys tucking in at some of Indy’s best dining spots featured through Devour Indy.

  1. Chapati | Westside | I could basically eat my way through the Lafayette Road food corridor, and when Chapati opened I was practically first in line. I give high marks to their Aloo Chaat, which is featured on the Devour menu. There’s just something about this place, too, which has traditional Middle Eastern seating style and décor and a mixed menu of Indian and Middle Eastern food. And did I mention the mango lassi?
  1. La Chinita Poblana | Midtown | This little gem has been my best discovery by far. This standing-room-only restaurant offers amazing tacos which weave together Latin and Asian flavors. My favorite things here (some of which are on the Devour menu): Spicy eggplant taco, chips and guacamole, horchata and two-die-for churros.
  1. The Loft at Traders Point Creamery | Northside | There’s something so special, romantic and cozy about The Loft and it makes me feel like I’m miles outside of the city when I’m actually just out of its reach. And I’ve never had anything to eat from here that wasn’t superb, whether it’s ice cream (they operate a 100% grassfed and organic dairy farm, after all) or a handcrafted meal packed with local goodness.
  1. Osteria Pronto | Downtown | While I will almost always put local before all else, this unassuming restaurant—I say that because it’s located in a giant high-rise hotel and most hotel restaurants aren’t known for good food—is simply delicious and offers a great atmosphere. My favorite item here is the mushroom pizza, but I can’t imagine anything they’re offering during Devour isn’t worth stopping in to try.
  1. Taste Café | Midtown | When it comes to breakfast and brunch, this place has stolen my heart. Don’t let the casual, counter service atmosphere make you think the food is anything but beyond fresh, with local ingredients prepared to perfection no matter if you order something as seemingly simple as oatmeal.

Jared Boomer’s Top 5 Favorite Devour Indy Dining Spots

Jared Boomer is the Morning Show Producer/Midday Host for KORN Country 100.3 (WYGB-FM) in Franklin. In his free time, Jared enjoys going to concerts, sporting events, training for the upcoming One America 500 Festival Mini Marathon (his first one!) and checking out the Indy restaurant scene. These are his five favorite restaurants involved in Devour Indy this year.

  1. Scotty’s Brewhouse (Downtown, Northside on 96th, Northside in Carmel, Northside in Noblesville, Midtown, Southside, Westside) It seems like whenever my friends and I are trying to find a place to watch the game, or grab a quick bite, we always decide on Scotty’s. They have a huge variety from burgers, to pizzas, to wraps, so there’s something for everyone to like. I would definitely suggest the Mac n Cheese Burger, and some Buffalo Wings. Plus you have to grab some Thr3e Wise Men house beers to wash it all down with too. They have a great Two for $15 lunch deal going for Devour Indy, and you can also get 10% off any Carryout/Delivery Orders by using the promo code: DEVOUR

  1. Red Lion Grog House (Downtown) After I went to London a few years ago, I came back to Indy trying to find a restaurant that gave me the same feel (and cuisine) as some of the London pubs I visited while on my trip. I feel that Red Lion Grog House in Fountain Square gets pretty darn close. Definitely check out their Fish and Chips and also Bangers and Mash if you want a really authentic English dish. They also have daily beer specials and trivia on Tuesday and Thursday nights! So grab yourself a pint of Strongbow and prepare to put your useless random knowledge to the test. Red Lion has a three-course, two for $35 deal running for Devour Indy.

  1. Johnny Carino’s (Southside) Located not too far from the Greenwood Park Mall, Johnny Carino’s has delicious Italian food at a very reasonable price. Also, they make their sauces fresh every single day, which is a definite plus. Some personal favs for entrees include the Lemon Rosemary Chicken and Chicken Primavera, and definitely get an order of Bruschetta Carino for an appetizer. Carino’s has a $20 for two lunch option and a $35 for two dinner option for Devour Indy.

  1. Bazbeaux Pizza (Downtown, Northside, Midtown) If you’ve never been to a Bazbeaux’s to stuff your face with some of the most delicious pizza you’ll ever eat, then what are you doing? They have a large selection of specialty pizzas, or you can also create your own. Get crazy and throw some of their more intriguing toppings such as avocado, eggplant, fancy lump crab, or their house made chorizo on your pie that you won’t find at your typical pizza restaurant. Bazbeaux is offering any 12” specialty Pizza and 2 Small Tossed salads for $20 during Devour Indy.

  1. BRU Burger Bar (Downtown, Northside) The best burgers in the city. Hands. Down. BRU Burger Bar’s most famous location is on Mass. Ave., but they also have a location in Carmel, and for you fellow Southsiders, a location in Plainfield will be opening soon too. I try to hit up BRU at least once a month as I try to accomplish my task of trying everything on their menu. My favorite burgers include the Bru Burger (there’s a reason it’s named after the place where you eat it) and also the Provençal Burger. Also the fries are good, but the onion rings with their house-made ketchup are really where it’s at. BRU Burger is running a three-course 2 for $30 deal during Devour Indy.
